Dastardly Computer/Windows/ Norton/Wednesday/!!

Gosh that was a bad day. Yesterday was a real stretch for me as I had about 13 hours of almost back to back activity. First, there was the string of classes each right after another for the first 7 hours of the day. Then there was my math group meeting, and right after that was my Malaysian Student Assoc. meeting.

I got back at about 10.30pm and was about to get started on writing a proposal that would get us some funding for the SEA Culture Night, when something just had to make the day a whole lot “sweeter”. I couldn’t even launch my WS Word. Every time I double clicked the icon, the program would just halt and the splash screen.

After some troubleshooting, I narrowed down the source of the problem to Norton Antivirus. MS Word runs NAV to scan any documents before the program actually launches. There was something going on with NAV which caused MS Word to just freeze.

My plan of action was to take out NAV and reinstall it. Sadly, it wasn’t as simple as that. Somewhere in the middle of the installation process, everything would stop and the program would throw a window at me telling me “Installation Failed”. Just what I needed.

As I learned later on that night, a simple “add/remove programs” will not do. NAV writes stuff pretty deep in the registry and leaves some common files here and there that will launch at startup even after NAV has been uninstalled. Thanks to symantec’s online support database, I was able to carry out some steps to do a clean uninstall and reinstall NAV. To cut the already long story short, I managed to reinstall NAV and got everything to run again. But it was already 2am in the morning, and what was supposed to be a productive night turned out to be an evening of troubleshooting and frustration.

I feel I really shouldn’t have done that Windows Update thingy. Not all the updates are good for your computer.
