My Lap Cheong Fix
This is a heads up for those of you in Ann Arbor who are looking for lap cheong without having to go to the nearest Chinatown (Chicago).
I’ve been warned against the ones in China Merchandise on Plymouth Rd. But I was there the other day and decided to give it a go. Beh tahan liao . I avoided the ones in the vacuum sealed packages as the more “commercialized” the look, the less authentic they are. I tend to stick to that rule very often.
Instead, I went for the ones that were hanging over the cold cut meat section. Yes, the ones that have been exposed to the elements. After all, they were the ones that looked the most authentic. Wrinkled like prunes, dusty, etc. Haha.
I got about four, and they cost about 50 cents sebatang, which I, after trying, felt was absolutely worth it. Taste exactly like the real thing. In fact, they were better than the ones I got from Toronto last year. The ones from Toronto had some ammonia-like smell. Bleh.
I found it really interesting that the lap cheong was actually labeled as “Canton Sausage”. Go try them. You wont be disappointed.
